The Manchester Evening News reported in January that Van de Beek existed on the same shortlist as Grealish and James Maddison, suggesting that United may have moved on.
The playmaker was absent from Ajax’s last friendly due to “developments” over his future and now looks set to move to Old Trafford in the coming days.
This £ 40million move could call a Grealish transfer into question.
MEN’s Samuel Luckhurst noted that van de Beek was probably not United’s main target – but he’s the player they ended up with for a cheaper price. Another clue that any move for Grealish could be scrapped.
While United could return for Grealish, it remains to be seen how he would fit into a United squad that could boast of Mason Greenwood, Paul Pogba, Anthony Martial, van de Beek and Marcus Rashford.
Grealish’s ability should never be questioned, and while he wouldn’t shy away from competition, perhaps the incoming deal with van de Beek should make a move from Grealish to United a little more unlikely – although not. completely impossible.
