Arsenal fans and Cesc Fabregas react as Karl-Johan Johnsson shines

Manchester United advanced to the Europa League semi-finals with a 1-0 overtime victory over FC Copenhagen – but goalkeeper Karl-Johan Johnsson received the applause, drawing praise from Arsenal fans and Cesc Fabregas .

United hit the woodwork several times and had more than one disallowed goal in the first 90 minutes. Finally, Bruno Fernandes scored from the penalty spot to send United into the last four.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s team also had to defend themselves. Bryan Oviedo had a glorious scoring chance in the second half, only for an astonishing block from Aaron Wan-Bissaka to turn down the ex-Everton and Sunderland man.

While United have earned a spot in the last four, it was Sweden international Johnsson who was praised on social media for his display. His 13 saves against United were the most important in a Europa League game since 2009.

They notably denied Anthony Martial with a superb one-handed save, preventing Marcus Rashford in a head-to-head and many other efforts. He only joined Copenhagen in the summer of 2019 on the French side of Guingamp.

Arsenal supporters have reacted to his stellar performance by urging their club to consider him – given doubts about Emi Martinez’s future at Arsenal as a replacement for Bernd Leno. Fabregas also praised Johnsson’s display.
