A pandemic DNC: telethon, commercial and clumsy family Zoom in one | American News

A strange new political creature took its first breath on Monday evening. Part of the most unconventional of Democratic national conventions was a heartfelt telethon, a two-hour commercial part, and an awkward family chat with Zoom. There will be plenty of chair criticism, but overall party leaders will be happy to have projected unity in diversity, moved past major technical issues, and finished on the pardon note from Michelle Obama, who has delivered what amounted to an alternative speech on the state of the union.

As in so many other things in 2020, we were in uncharted territory. No loud cheers, no balloons coming down from the ceilings, no loud protests in the sweaty conference floor – everything is being abandoned as the coronavirus pandemic continues to sweep the United States.
