2023 Cadillac Lyriq EV unveiled: impressive lineup, futuristic style

Cadillac’s introduction to its electric lineup begins today with the launch of the LYRIQ show car – a dynamic, modern, fully electric luxury crossover. The propulsion system and supporting technologies position Cadillac as a leader in electrification, connectivity and automated driving, all delivered with thrilling performance and a new threshold of technological integration.

“Led by LYRIQ, Cadillac will redefine American luxury over the next decade with a new portfolio of transformative electric vehicles,” said Steve Carlisle, executive vice president and president of GM North America. “We will deliver experiences that engage the senses, anticipate desires and enable our customers to take extraordinary journeys.”

The LYRIQ is based on GM’s next-generation modular electric vehicle platform and driven by the Ultium propulsion system, allowing Cadillac to offer customers a variety of range and performance options. With range being one of the most important factors when selecting an electric vehicle, we design the LYRIQ to deliver over 300 miles of range on a full charge, based on internal testing1. Performance and technology highlights include:
• Charging options to suit a variety of preferences for home, work and on the road – including fast DC charge rates of over 150 kilowatts and Tier 2 charge rates up to 19 kW2
• Performance rear-wheel drive and all-wheel drive configurations
• The latest version of Super Cruise3, the industry’s first true hands-free driver assistance feature, available on over 200,000 miles of compatible freeway and recently enhanced to include automated lane change
• New technologies such as enhanced dual-plane head-up display in augmented reality and automatic remote parking
• The brand’s most seamless and adaptive technological interaction with driver and passengers, including the latest Cadillac user experience, which is presented in an advanced 33-inch diagonal LED display covering the driver’s entire viewing area

“LYRIQ was designed to make every journey exhilarating and leverages over a century of innovation to propel the brand into a new era, while rewarding passengers with a more personal, connected and immersive experience,” said Jamie Brewer, Chief Engineer of Cadillac LYRIQ. “To do this, we have developed an architecture specifically for electric vehicles. It is not only an exceptional electric vehicle, but above all a Cadillac. ”

Some luxury electric vehicles today have an adapted traditional internal combustion engine architecture, which is not the case with the LYRIQ. Cadillac’s all-new modular EV platform that the LYRIQ is based on is the foundation for its liberating performance. With a dedicated EV architecture, its design eliminates the significant physical constraints of adapting electric propulsion into a conventional vehicle architecture, for an optimized design that supports greater range, an engaging driving experience and a new interpretation of passenger space.

Within LYRIQ, the Ultium battery system is a structural element of the architecture, integrated in a way that contributes to ride and handling, as well as to safety. In fact, the lower center of gravity and the weight distribution close to 50/50, thanks to the installation of the battery, give a sporty vehicle, responsive and allowing a lively driving.

Additionally, the LYRIQ is primarily driven by the rear wheels, with a performance all-wheel drive option available. The placement of the drive motor in the rear of the vehicle contributes to an even greater sense of balance and agility – attributes that confirm Cadillac’s long-standing commitment to satisfactory performance. It also allows the system to channel more torque to the pavement without wheel slip for exhilarating acceleration and greater cornering ability. Vehicles equipped with performance all-wheel drive go one step further, with a second drive unit positioned at the front of the vehicle, which allows great tuning flexibility, improving vehicle dynamics and driver performance.

The Cadillac LYRIQ is powered by GM’s new Ultium battery system, which delivers approximately 100 kilowatt hours of power to deliver stirring performance.

Ultium’s advanced NCMA (nickel-cobalt-manganese-aluminum) chemistry uses aluminum in the cathode to help reduce the need for rare earth materials like cobalt. In fact, GM engineers have reduced the cobalt content by over 70% compared to current GM batteries.

Advanced battery chemistry is packaged in large, flat-pocket cells that allow intelligent construction of modules to reduce complexity and simplify cooling needs. In addition, the battery electronics are integrated directly into the modules, eliminating nearly 90% of the battery pack wiring, compared to current GM electric vehicles.

When it comes to charging, LYRIQ offers quick and convenient charging options, whether at home or on the go. With DC fast charging, the LYRIQ can charge at rates above 150 kW.

Designed to make interaction with its technologies more intuitive and rewarding, LYRIQ’s partnership with driver and passengers is both stimulating and clever.

On approach, LYRIQ recognizes the driver and initiates a “greeting” with a choreographed lighting sequence, while preparing the cabin for the trip, including seat, mirror and climate control settings. Once inside, LYRIQ offers Cadillac’s highest level of driver information, infotainment and connectivity integration, for a smoother and more rewarding experience.

An advanced 33-inch diagonal LED display cleverly integrates a single large screen that covers the driver’s viewing area and integrates detailed driver information, infotainment controls and camera views. This new display has the highest pixel density available in the automotive industry today and can display over a billion colors, 64 times more than any other vehicle in the automotive industry, providing a breathtaking in-car experience without previous at Cadillac.

Additional technology and interactive highlights include:

• Battery and charge monitoring with simple, instant graphics. The system identifies the vehicle’s energy needs at home and on the go, according to the owner’s preferences, while monitoring and forecasting energy consumption and providing charging suggestions.
• The new enhanced dual-plane head-up display in augmented reality uses two planes: a near plane showing speed, direction and more, and a far plane showing transparent navigation signals and other important alerts.
• The latest version of Super Cruise, the hands-free driver assistance feature, including automated lane change.3
• Monitored remote parking that uses ultrasonic sensors to help LYRIQ park in parallel or perpendicular parking spaces – whether the driver is inside or outside the vehicle.

LYRIQ technology also treats sound in two important ways: blocking out unwanted sounds and making the most of the sounds passengers want to hear.

For the first time, Cadillac will showcase new road noise cancellation technology, which takes active noise cancellation to the next level by introducing more microphones and accelerometers, which improve noise cancellation capabilities. With this new system, Cadillac performance and sound engineers can target the frequency range of tire cavity noise, reducing the noise level in the vehicle and allowing a quieter in-cab experience.

The Cadillac LYRIQ is based on the brand’s exclusive partnership with AKG. “With LYRIQ, we wanted to deliver a sound experience that would transport the driver from a vehicle to a recording studio,” said Hussein Khalil, chief audio design engineer at Cadillac. “With the AKG audio system, we are able to deliver this experience with the quality and reliability that luxury customers expect.”

When launched, LYRIQ will offer an AKG Studio 19-speaker sound system that delivers exceptionally crisp and precise sound reproduction, allowing drivers and passengers to enjoy their favorite music.

Cadillac’s first electric SUV features a bold design that introduces a new face, a new proportion and a new presence for the brand’s new generation of electric vehicles. It is a forward-looking vision unconstrained by the needs of a traditional internal combustion engine and transmission.

“The LYRIQ represents the next iteration of the brand’s iconic style, made possible by electrification, as only Cadillac can express it,” said Andrew Smith, executive director of Global Cadillac Design. “Inside and out, LYRIQ is a thoughtful integration of design and technology and aims to make every ride an opportunity.

Defined by taut lines and clean surfaces, LYRIQ is assertive and modern, characterized by a low, swift roofline and wide stance that underline agility and transmit confidence. Additional details such as an air circulation roof spoiler express the special attention to aerodynamics to optimize efficiency on the highway.

A distinctive ‘black crystal’ grille up front is one of LYRIQ’s most unique and expressive design cues. It’s a dynamic feature too, as it’s part of a dramatic lighting choreography that – with distinctive vertical, slim LED lighting – greets the owner as they approach. At the rear, a split tail light design incorporates slim LEDs that are also integrated into the lighting choreography.

Inside, LYRIQ’s new electric vehicle architecture opens up possibilities for space and vehicle design; and Cadillac designers took the opportunity to rethink the use of space and the placement of various interior elements.

The result is a more airy and minimalistic design that does more to involve the driver and passengers in the driving experience while providing exceptional functionality in terms of storage solutions. It’s also packed with subtle but obsessive details like backlit speaker grilles, curved screens with hidden storage, and, like the exterior, orchestrated lighting features.
