When it comes to recruiting, situations can change in no time at all, and that’s exactly what happened with the recruiting of Andrel Anthony in 2021 East Lansing (MI). Since the start of the pandemic, the Michigan State Spartans were believed to have clearly the lead on the home receiver, as they presented him as their main target on the board.
But soon after Anthony announced his date and time for his decision, he paid an unofficial visit to Ann Arbor. A few days ago, crystal balls started moving from the Spartans to the Wolverines. And just like that, Anthony became the fourth wide receiver to join Michigan’s 2021 class.
The two other finalists in Anthony’s top four were Notre Dame and Penn State. It’s a three-star, ranked # 529 nationally and # 85 wide receiver.
Anthony plays for East Lansing High School, catching 54 passes for 954 yards and nine TDs as a junior. It fits the mold of the exterior receiver that UM pursues in this class, measuring 6 feet 2 inches and weighing 175 pounds. He has a 40-yard dash time of 4.47, which would be really nice if he was accurate, but there aren’t many details on when and how he was timed.
In addition to playing the receiver, Anthony is also a quality defensive back. He was recruited by Notre Dame as an athlete with his preference for his defense. He is also an outstanding basketball player, helping his team reach a 19-2 record and a place in the district championships before they are canceled due to COVID-19.
As for Michigan, it is the 21st entry in its 2021 category, which now sits 8th in the country and 2nd in the Big Ten. With four wide receivers on board, that likely ends Michigan’s pursuit of four-star Jayden Thomas and Lorenzo Styles, the other two major targets.
