How the 24-team playoff format works

The NHL has shared the “competitive format” for the 24-team playoff setup for how the 2020 NHL playoffs will play out. The “round robin” concerns the ranking of the top four teams from each conference. The “qualifying round” was previously called the “play-in” round. Toronto will host the Eastern Conference teams at Scotiabank Arena, while Edmonton will host the Western Conference teams at Rogers Place.

Competitive format

In each conference, the teams are ranked by percentage points.

Round robin: The best 4 teams play for the first round classification (regular season overtime rules in effect)

The qualifying round: The remaining 8 teams play the best of 5 series to advance to the first round (playoff overtime rules in effect)

First round and second round: The format (seeding compared to the support) and the lengths of the series will be at the best of seven.

Stanley Cup Final and Conference Finals: The Best-of-7 series will take place at Rogers Place in Edmonton.

* The winners of the qualifying round play the 4 best seeds of the first round. Individual matches in the first round series are yet to be determined.
