2 cases of COVID-19 confirmed at Chinook Center


Two cases of COVID-19 have been confirmed at the Chinook Center shopping mall in Calgary.Businesses and mall staff were notified of the positive cases on Friday in a letter from the mall management.

“Affected customers, H&M and Boston Pizza, acted quickly and responsibly by immediately contacting Cadillac Fairview and Alberta Health Services (AHS). At this point, AHS said no further action was required and the building could remain open for business, ”the letter, which was obtained by CBC News.

“We strongly urge all customers to follow this example and immediately notify the CF and AHS in the event that a CF Chinook Center employee, contractor or guest is confirmed or suspected to have COVID-19.

A spokesperson for Cadillac Fairview, which owns the mall, confirmed in an emailed statement that there were two confirmed cases at store premises, but did not say whether the cases involved buyers or employees.

The company said the mall has implemented improved cleaning measures, physical distancing and increased the number of hand sanitizer stations in response to the pandemic.

An Alberta Health spokesperson said an outbreak in a facility like a shopping mall is declared if there is evidence of linked transmission from five or more cases of COVID-19 with common exposure.

Alberta Health said officials were conducting contact tracing and anyone at risk of exposure was contacted, isolated and tested.
