Ten men have died in an Indian city after drinking alcohol-based hand sanitizer, as local liquor stores were closed due to a coronavirus lockdown.

The men in the town of Kurichedu in Andhra Pradesh are said to be addicted to alcohol.

“Some people heavily dependent on alcohol had consumed hand sanitizers for the high,” said Siddharth Kaushal, the district’s senior police official.

“Alcohol is not available due to the lockdown, but hand sanitizers are readily available. ”

Several other people who had also drunk disinfectant left the hospital, Kaushal said.

He added that some of those who died had other health problems.

Family members of the victims told police they fell unconscious hours after drinking the hand sanitizer, according to the Hindustan Times.

It is not known how much they consumed.

Local media said the victims were between 25 and 65 years old.
