Signs of governments reassessing their response to coronaviruses have been scattered around the world, with the mayor of Los Angeles saying the city has been reopened too quickly, Hong Kong enacting new stricter rules on wearing masks and Spain shutting down overcrowded beaches. With deaths worldwide exceeding 600,000, the United States, by far the hardest hit, ended a week in which they recorded their highest new case numbers for three consecutive days, bearing their total to 3.7 million infections and 140.00 deaths.

The virus has now infected more than 14 million people worldwide. As clusters grow from Spain to Australia, officials are struggling to craft a cohesive response to the crisis over protecting public health or easing restrictions to save businesses.

Infections have soared in American states, including California, Florida, Texas and Arizona, with many accusing a disorderly and partisan approach to lifting the locks, as well as the resistance of some Americans to wearing masks. Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti said Los Angeles was “on the brink” of widespread new stay-at-home orders as Los Angeles County continued to see the state’s largest increase in confirmed cases of coronavirus.

California reported its fourth-highest daily total of newly confirmed coronavirus cases on Saturday, with more than 9,000. In Florida, where health officials reported nearly 12,500 new infections and nearly 90 more deaths on Sunday, the Senator American Marco Rubio called for a consistent, non-partisan message.

Other countries are grappling with the same dilemma, with Spain opting for local lockdowns and unforced stay-at-home advice in its region of Catalonia. Officials in the Australian state of Victoria have taken a more stringent approach. Face masks will be mandatory for around 5 million people in and around Melbourne from Thursday, with the threat of Australian $ 200 ($ 140) in fines for violators.

“Most of us wouldn’t leave the house without our keys, we wouldn’t leave our house without our cell phone. You won’t be able to leave the house without your mask, ”Victoria Premier Daniel Andrews said.

In France too, people risk a fine of 135 euros (154 dollars) from Monday for non-compliance with a new decree to wear a mask in public places inside.

In Asia, Hong Kong has also toughened its measures, with leader Carrie Lam confirming on Sunday that daily infections exceeded 100 for the first time in the territory.

Lam had previously ordered businesses to close and made face masks mandatory on public transport, but said it would soon be mandatory to wear them inside any covered public place.

India has recorded 40,425 new cases of coronavirus and 681 deaths in a new single-day record in the country, government data showed on Monday.

The new cases place the total count in India, among those most affected by the pandemic, at 1,118,043, the Federal Ministry of Health said on its website. The latest deaths bring the total number of deaths to 27,497. With the recent spike in cases, several regions, including the Bengaluru Computer Center and the Goa Resort State, have announced new bans and restrictions.
