VANCOUVER – Although COVID-19 restrictions are slowly lifting in many parts of Canada, international travel is still not recommended, and a new survey suggests that most Canadians and Americans are not prepared to travel so much that there is no vaccine. According to the recent online survey conducted by Research Co., less than a third of Canadians take a flight in their own province. About a fifth are willing to take flights to another continent, while only 17% said they would take a flight to the United States.

“The appetite for travel before a COVID-19 vaccine is readily available is low in Canada and the United States,” Mario Canseco, president of Research Co., said in a press release.

“North American residents aged 55 and over, who are generally willing to explore and spend, are particularly reluctant to travel unless vaccination is a reality.

But about 35% of Canadians say they would take a ferry. This percentage is highest in British Columbia, where almost half say they would travel this way.

However, it’s not just Canadians who are reluctant to travel before a vaccine is available. The Research Co. poll suggests that 36% of Americans would take a train, while about 35% would take a flight to another state.

But fewer Americans are keen on taking bus trips or long-haul flights to Canada.

And even though cruise ships were hit hard at the start of the pandemic, one in five Americans surveyed said they would take a cruise. Only 13 percent of Canadians said the same, while only 8 percent of residents of British Columbia said they would happily take a cruise before a vaccine.

The results are based on online studies conducted from July 1 to July 5, 2020, with representative samples of 1,000 adults in Canada and 1,200 adults in the United States. The margin of error – which measures the variability of the sample – is plus or minus 3.1 percentage points for Canada and plus or minus 2.8 percentage points for the United States.
