Steve Bruce has instructed Newcastle United’s screening department to find another Allan Saint-Maximin – and the Magpies head coach will continue to monitor Jetro Willems’ progress and see what happens.Since Bruce was only appointed three and a half weeks before the start of the season last summer, this was always going to be an important window for him when it came to putting his mark on the team.

While Newcastle had plans in place, the coronavirus and the uncertainty surrounding the club’s potential takeover complicated matters.

Anyway, Bruce would like his scouts to find another Saint-Maximin given the impact of the French since his move from Nice to £ 16.5 million.

“It is very difficult to mix with the elite these days,” he told reporters when calling Zoom. “When you see the level of play on Thursday evening, you just have to purr in both teams. I know Liverpool lost 5-0 to City but I never thought it was 5-0.

“The elite is still far away, but for me the most important thing is to try to keep the club moving forward. “

“I certainly think with the signing of Almiron and I have seen the best of Joe also in the past few weeks, in particular. It is certainly more accomplished in a broader role. He likes it – that’s where he played – so it’s given me food for thought too.

“Certainly with Almiron and Allan, we have to add that little bit of quality. We have to keep adding that little bit of quality because, make no mistake, they are the ones who make the difference.

“We have a very good core of players here. We just need to keep adding one or two and see where it takes us. ”

“This brings the testing service to find another Allan – that little bit of quality makes the difference – and to keep trying to close that gap. ”

Saint-Maximin was one of the five signatures Newcastle made last summer and the 23-year-old quickly became friends with his newcomer Jetro Willems.

Willems joined Newcastle on a season loan, but his spell on Tyneside was cut short after suffering a serious knee injury in the black and white win over Chelsea in January.

Eintracht Frankfurt’s rear wing, who has stepped up his refurbishment in recent weeks, paid tribute to Newcastle staff and fans on Instagram earlier this week and said they will always have a “special place” in his heart.

Willems added that he “would see what the future holds” and Bruce certainly has not forgotten the Dutchman.

“I will not forget his goal against Liverpool and his goal against Man City and they remind us of what a good player, the kid is,” he added.

“The situation of the rear wing suited him too. He played very well for us and there is nothing worse than having a horrible injury like him.

” We wish him a quick recovery. We will continue to monitor its progress and see what is going on. He’s a really good player, kid and a smashing boy to go with. ”

“It’s so unfortunate that these horrible sides of football, he’s going to have to face them again.

“I think this is the second big injury he has had in his career. He is only young, so I wish him a speedy recovery and we will continue to monitor his recovery. “
