‘The Old Guard’ is based on a comic

Netflix The old guard is based on the comic book of the same name by Greg Rucka and illustrator Leandro Fernandez. It centers around a group of immortal soldiers who become the target of a medical company that plans to extract their powers for profit.

The film begins with Andromaque de Scythie alias Andy (Charlize Theron) bringing together his teammates – Sebastian le Livre alias Booker (Matthias Schoenaerts), Yusuf Al-Kaysani alias Joe (Marwan Kenzari) and Nicolo di Genova alias Nicky (Luca Marinelli). The team then heads to South Sudan, where they are ambushed, but survive.

Andy then travels to Afghanistan to recruit his new immortal ally, Nile (Kiki Layne). From there, the team heads to Goussanville, France, where they use an old abandoned church as a hiding place.

‘The Old Guard’ was filmed in just two countries

From France to South Sudan, The old guard takes its characters all over the world. But according to director Gina Prince-Bythewood, the shooting only took place in two countries – England and Morocco.

“We had to create three countries in Morocco,” she told Radio Times. “The beauty of Morocco is that the landscape is so different that we have been able to realistically create Afghanistan and realistically create South Sudan.”

The old church that was installed in Goussainville was actually All Saints Church in Shirburn, Oxfordshire. And the French pharmacy visited by Andy was filmed in the town of Sandwich in Kent. Prince-Bythewood said she would have liked to take the production to other countries, but was limited by the film’s budget.

“I was really hoping to shoot in France, and we had spotted there and it was my first time there,” she said. “But when you don’t have the funds, which shocked me given how many we had, no matter how creative.”

The director tried to find beauty in every place

In an interview with Motion Pictures, Prince-Bythewood said she could have used outdoor sets to mimic many of the locations depicted in The old guard. But, in the end, she decided to use the landscapes she had available to make it look more organic.

“When it came to production design, we used so many natural sites to build them,” she said. “There is just something to be in a real space, its natural history, its appearance, its feel – It was essential to find this beauty in every area we photographed.

It’s safe to say that the Prince-Bythewood approach has worked. It was almost impossible to say that the film was shot somewhere other than where its story took place. If the film gets a sequel, it will be interesting to see which international cities fans see next.

The old guard is currently broadcasting on Netflix.
