“Weird Al” Yankovic marked the arrival of the filmed performance of Hamilton on Disney + by bringing together a new video for his “Hamilton Polka”.
Weird Al took out his polka mix from Hamilton returns in 2018 as part of Lin-Manuel Miranda’s monthly series “Hamildrops”. With his faithful accordion in hand, Yankovic condensed the three-hour musical into a five-minute mix with pleasant interpretations of “Alexander Hamilton”, “My Shot”, “You Be Back”, “Wait for It”, “The Room Where It Happens” and “The Schuyler Sisters”.
Weird Al’s new “Hamilton Polka” video combines the song with footage from the new performance film. To make this work, however, the footage is frequently – and hilarious – accelerated to fit the frenetic pace of Weird Al. There is also undeniable fun watching people like Miranda, Daveed Diggs, Leslie Odom Jr. and well others move their lips and hear Weird Al’s nasal croon come out.
In 2018, Weird Al and Miranda spoke with Rolling stone about their friendship and the birth of the Hamilton Polka. Polka medleys have, of course, been a key tenet of Weird Al’s career, and as a result, Miranda said he was rather nervous when he asked Yankovic to create one for his musical.
“Look, as a longtime fan of Weird Al, this is a scary request to make,” said Miranda. “I also know that there have only been two other cases where he dedicated a whole polka mix to a particular artist. There are ‘Hot Rocks Polka’ on the UHF soundtrack and queen polka [‘Bohemian Polka’]. I can’t pretend to be in that rarefied air like the Rolling fuckin ‘Stones! But I asked. ”
