UK coronavirus LIVE: Boris Johnson warns to ‘stay alert’ before ‘Super Saturday’ as schools ready to return

Government could take more national action in some areas to stop the spread of the virusLocal government secretary Robert Jenrick told councilors that the government could take more national action in some areas to try to stop the spread of the coronavirus.

He said at a local government association (LGA) virtual conference: “In Leicester, the government has taken national measures to ensure that we delay the easing of the measures and that we close down businesses in non-essential detail in the city.

“There can be local epidemics, as we see in Leicester, when you have to do everything you can to act quickly and decisively with Track and Trace, engaging with your local communities, with Public Health England and others.

“If you do not act, the virus, as we know, can become established.

“If necessary, the government will take national action to stop the risk of the virus spreading further.”
