Featherweight champion Alexander Volkanovski was not about to give Max Holloway immediate revenge because he felt that their first fight at UFC 245 in December 2019 “was not even close”. But here we are tonight (Saturday July 11, 2020) at UFC 251 on “Fight Island” in Abu Dhabi, with Volkanovski motivated to prove that his victory over “Blessed” months ago was no accident.
The two fighters came out and touched gloves, Max put the pressure on early and Volkanovski stopped him in his tracks with a clear and reversed right. Volkanovski connected with an inner leg kick, which was a key ingredient to his success when they first met. Volkanovski tried to get a combination, but Holloway pushed him away with a combination of his own. Volkanovski returned to the leg kicks, with Max shrugging them with a nod and a sly smile. Volkanovski connected with a nice left hook, then more kicks in the leg as Max tried to play on their efficiency. Max pierced it with a right right hand which immediately created swelling under Volkanovski’s right eye. With 10 seconds remaining, Max connected with a high kick that dropped Volkanovski to one knee. It clearly hurt him, but he looked good between rounds.
Second round: in progress…
