US President Donald Trump on Thursday announced that he had canceled segments of the Republican national convention scheduled for Florida next month, citing a “surge” of the coronavirus.Convention events will still take place in North Carolina.

“Having a big convention is not the right time,” Trump said of Jacksonville.

Trump moved part of the GOP convention to Florida last month amid a row with Democratic leaders in North Carolina over holding an event indoors with supporters without masks.

But those plans have been steadily scaled back as cases of the virus have increased in Florida and much of the country over the past month.

A small subset of GOP delegates will still meet in Charlotte, North Carolina to officially re-appoint Trump on August 24. Trump has said he will deliver an acceptance speech in another form.
