Toxic hand sanitizers: FDA warns 75 brands may be dangerous

The Food and Drug Administration’s list of potentially toxic hand sanitizers continues to grow, with the agency warning of more products contaminated with methanol.The latest warning from the FDA to consumers and healthcare providers is for hand sanitizers labeled as containing ethanol, but tested positive for methanol. Also known as wood alcohol, methanol can be toxic when absorbed through the skin and fatal if swallowed.

The regulatory agency has expanded its list of disinfectants for consumers to avoid – some of which have already been recalled and some the FDA recommends recall – to contain the potentially deadly substance to 75.
