Ambassatours announced on July 16 that it had decided to part ways with the ship after 20 years of ownership.

“While we are deeply aware of the importance of Theodore as an icon of Halifax, the reality is that we have been funding Theodore’s operation for several years,” Campbell said in the statement last week.

The boat was built in 2000 as a full-size replica of Theodore Tugboat, the main character of a CBC children’s television show that aired from 1993 to 2001.

Since then, Theodore has spent summers organizing children’s tours of the Port of Halifax, as well as traveling the Great Lakes and the coast in the United States and Canada, promoting tourism in Nova Scotia.

Last week, Anastasia Cook, 23, opened a GoFundMe page, seeking to purchase the ship and donate it to the Maritime Museum of the Atlantic or the Halifax Regional Municipality.

“Halifax is definitely… (Theodore Too) home and he’ll be miserable to go down to port and not be able to see his smiling face,” Cook told Global News last week.

Campbell has not identified the four new bidders, and it is still unclear whether the boat will stay in Halifax.
