The weather network – Gonzalo forms in the Atlantic, the 7th oldest storm on record


Wednesday, July 22, 2020, 12:04 p.m. – Tropical Depression Seven became Gonzalo on Wednesday morning, now the 7th oldest storm on record in the Atlantic Basin.

Tropical Storm Gonzalo formed over the Atlantic Ocean, the US National Hurricane Center (NHC) said on Wednesday.

The storm is currently located about 1,935 km east of the southern Windward Islands, while maximum sustained winds of 85 km / h, with stronger gusts, the NHC added.

Gonzalo is moving west at nearly 22 km / h, with the same expected movement, but at a faster speed, over the next few days. Further strengthening is expected over the next 48 hours and Gonzalo is expected to become a hurricane on Thursday.

Gonzalo is a small tropical cyclone, as tropical storm force winds extend outward only up to 35 km from the center.

According to Phillip Klotzbach, a meteorologist at Colorado State University, it is now the 7th oldest storm on record in the Atlantic Basin. The previous record belonged to Gert, who formed on July 24, 2005.
