The United States reports more than 70,000 new coronavirus infections for the second day in a row


The United States reported 71,558 new cases of Covid-19 on Saturday, making it the second day in a row the country has seen more than 70,000 new infections, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University.As of Saturday, daily average new cases have increased 18.34% nationwide from a week ago, according to CNBC analysis of Johns Hopkins data.

The United States leads the world in the number of reported cases with a total of 3.66 million since the Covid-19 hit. To date, 139,480 deaths from the virus have been reported in the United States, the highest number of deaths of any country in the world.

Nineteen states have set their own records for the daily average of new cases, with most of them seeing an increase of more than 25%. With almost all 50 states seeing an increase in the number of new cases, hospitalizations are increasing in 33 states, with 14 states reaching record levels in average current hospitalizations.

Florida and Texas each reported more than 10,000 new cases on Saturday, according to data from their state health departments. Twelve percent of Floridians tested for the virus came back positive, up from a recent high of 18%. More than 17% of Texans tested came back positive for the virus on Thursday.

Texas and Florida are the main hotbeds of the coronavirus outbreak in the U.S. The virus has increased since the spring after the Sunbelt states began to quickly reopen their economies after brief lockdowns. Florida reported more than 15,000 new cases as of Sunday, more than New York at its peak of 10,824 new cases on April 9.

Deaths are also on the rise in several states. Arizona, Florida and Texas have seen average daily deaths from the virus increase by more than 50% to record highs, according to CNBC’s analysis of Johns Hopkins data. South Carolina saw the average number of daily deaths increase by more than 22% to a new high for the state.

FEMA sends 18 refrigerated trucks to act as temporary mortuaries in Texas while the state orders more body bags for an increase in the number of deaths.

The United States hit a national record for new cases on Thursday, with 77,255 new cases. White House health adviser Dr Anthony Fauci praised New York on its handling of the coronavirus pandemic on Friday, amid a debate in the United States over whether states where the virus is is on the rise should return to more stringent lockout measures.

New York, once the epicenter of the epidemic in the United States, reduced new daily infections by more than 10,000 at its peak to 776 at the end of this week. New York City is expected to enter Phase 4 on Monday, allowing for outdoor activities like zoos, outdoor movies and gardens.

Governor Andrew Cuomo has implemented one of the toughest lockdowns in the country. Indoor bars and restaurants have yet to reopen in New York City as a precaution. Governors in hot states like Arizona, Florida, Texas, and Georgia have been reluctant to implement strict social distancing measures.
