However, there was barely enough time to revel in the lead as Sead Kolasinac’s mistake allowed Son Heung-min to equalize before Toby Alderweireld took advantage of a poor corner kick to return home the winner in the second half.
Much of the post-game reaction has focused on what has been the Gunners’ Achilles heel for the past decade – defense.
Even with a training change, they remain vulnerable at the back, and this is an area where head coach Mikel Arteta will almost certainly have to revise if his team wants to close the gap with Chelsea and Manchester United next season .
So with the summer transfer window open at the end of the season, it would not be surprising if supporters called for a defensive reshuffle before the 2020/21 campaign.
There will be at least one new defender on the team as William Saliba’s Arsenal career begins after a year on loan at Saint-Etienne.
But who would be the ideal partner for the prodigy of France?
Well, the popular answer would be RB Leipzig’s Dayot Upamecano – A player long linked to a move to the Emirates Stadium. Although funds are limited, the Gunners may have to sell before moving for the 21-year-old.
And that’s where former recruiting chief Sven Mislintat could play a surprise role.
The German transfer guru is now the sports director of the Bundesliga VfB Stuttgart and football.londonunderstands that they have expressed their interest in the signing of the loan from Arsenal defender Konstantinos Mavropanos.
Interestingly, Mislintat was responsible for signing the Greek central defender of PAS Giannina in January 2018.

Of course, with Mavropanos valued at £ 2.16 million on transfermarkt, a permanent sale would be much more suitable for the Gunners as it raises funds for a potential deal for Upamecano.
And with the defenseman out of contract at the end of next season, this summer is their last chance to win transfer fees unless he ties him to a new contract.
So it could be that Mislintat plays a role in Arsenal by finding the ideal partner for Saliba this summer?
