The number of new coronavirus figures in Leicestershire in the past 24 hours

Only 16 new cases of coronavirus were added to Leicester’s daily toll today – while no new cases were recorded in Oadby and Wigston.The area is currently undergoing a program of mass testing after health bosses worried about local numbers.

Both areas are still closed locally due to their number of cases and rate of infection.

Spread across the district and borough, three cases have been confirmed in Leicestershire – one each in Blaby, Harborough and North West Leicestershire.

The number of cases and infection rates remain unchanged in Charnwood, Hinckley and Bosworth and Melton.

Today’s data on cases and infection rate per 100,000 people, released by the DHSC:

  • Leicester – 4,636 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 population: 1,305
  • Blaby – 505 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 population: 502
  • Charnwood – 805 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 440
  • Harborough – 385 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 population: 416
  • Hinckley et Bosworth – 543 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 population: 483
  • Melton – 161 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 population: 315
  • North West Leicestershire – 323 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 inhabitants: 316
  • Oadby et Wigston – 467 cases in total. Rate per 100,000 population: 818

Blackburn has now passed Leicester with the highest coronavirus infection rate in England, new figures have shown.

The city’s rate fell to 77.7 per 100,000 residents in the seven days to July 17, according to the latest available weekly data.

Leicester registered 276 new cases in the seven days leading up to July 17, or 77.7 cases per 100,000 population.

In the previous week, up to July 10, there were 429 cases and an infection rate of 120.8 cases per 100,000 people.

The same data set shows that Leicestershire’s seven-day infection rate is 11.6 per 100,000 and that 81 cases have been identified in the same period.

Data is only available at the top level of local authorities.

The seven-day infection rate is one of the ways health officials keep tabs on the spread of the coronavirus.
