“He does his best to be a nice person,” says Newton to Vulture, “but the pressure – it takes a lot. And I think he feels that he alone can do everything the best he can.
“We were doing this night scene, there were so many extras with pyrotechnics and you name it, and it was a scene with him and me on the balcony. And I don’t think it’s a very well written scene. I get mad at him (Cruise’s character). We are frustrated with each other. And we are looking at Spain. It was not going well.
“And (director) John Woo, god bless, was not there. He was downstairs, looking at everything on a monitor. And John had made a decision at the start of the film, certainly without my knowledge, that he didn’t speak English, which I think was very useful to him, but it was extremely useless for all of us. So this scene was going on, and Tom was not happy with what I was doing because I had the s ** ttiest lines. ”
Cruise was so frustrated with having to explain what he wanted, he suggested that he and Thandie switch roles.
“We rehearsed and they recorded it, and then he said, ‘I’ll be you. You are me. So we filmed the whole scene with me being him – because, believe me, I knew the lines by then – and him playing me. And it was the most useless … I see nothing less revealing. It just pushed me further into a place of terror and insecurity. It was a shame. And bless him. And I really want to bless him because he was doing his best. ”
To make matters worse, Thandie’s focus was distracted by a zit on his co-star’s nose.
“I remember at the beginning of the night, seeing this slight red mark on his nose, and at the end of the night, I’m not mistaken – this is how his metabolism is so fierce – he had a big point white where that red dot was, “adds the actress. “It would take someone else 48 hours to demonstrate a zit. I saw it grow, and it was like the zit was me, getting bigger and bigger. ”
When they returned to the scene a week later, Thandie stepped it up after realizing what Cruise wanted: “He just wanted that alpha b ** ch. And I did the best I could. It’s not the best way to get someone’s best job … It (Cruise) wasn’t horrible. It was just … he was really stressed. “
