Tempe train fire: “Catastrophe” as bridge collapses and cars engulfed in flames


Huge flames and thick clouds of smoke rise from a train after a bridge collapses in Arizona.Dramatic photographs and video footage show a fire that broke out after the train derailed over Tempe Town Lake.

Part of the bridge has fallen and fire covers almost the entire bridge which continues to burn in what has been termed a “disaster”.

Bright orange flames rise and dense dark gray smoke plumes fill the air, as shocking footage from the incident shows.

The smoke has been described in local reports as “thick”, “black” and “intense” with reports saying it can be seen “for miles”.

Emergency services and fire crews are on scene to tackle the blaze, where shocked witnesses are standing watching the disaster from afar.

“My daughter heard the noise, woke up and saw part of the train fall into the lake,” one said.

Others in the area said they were woken up by sirens.

A woman living nearby tweeted: “Suppose I’m glad I slept too long because I was going to head out to the lake for a quick stand-up paddle boarding around the lake this morning.

“I hope everyone in the water has cleared and got out of harm’s way. (Sic) ”

The incident happened early Wednesday on the south side of the lake.

Traffic in the area is restricted.

Tempe Police tweeted: “Tempe Police and Tempe Fire are at the scene of a train derailment and large fire over Tempe Town Lake.

“Several roads are restricted near Tempe Town Lake and west of downtown Tempe.

“Please avoid the area. ”
