Talks continue as Dominion strike deadline nears

Negotiations unfold on the cable between Loblaw and Unifor as a strike looms in 11 supermarkets in Newfoundland and Labrador. The union and the company have been in talks for eight months, but Unifor president Jerry Dias says as the hours pass it becomes clearer that a strike may be inevitable.

The union says Dominion stores have cut 60 full-time positions, or about one in five full-time jobs. Today, more than 80% of the remaining workers are part-time, and more than half earn less than $ 12 an hour, according to Dias.

The 1,400 or so frontline workers at Dominion stores have been working without a contract since last October and have not received a pay increase since spring 2018.

The original strike deadline was Friday, July 31 at 12:01 a.m.
