Syria says Israel is hitting southern Damascus; Iranian base hit | News from Israel

Syrian air defenses on Monday intercepted a barrage of missiles fired near the capital Damascus, state media reported in the latest wave of suspected Israeli attacks.

Sources said Israeli airstrikes hit a large Iran-backed ammunition depot on the outskirts of the capital and Iranian fighters were reportedly killed.

State television said Israeli missiles were fired at the Syrian Golan Heights and live footage showed explosions in the sky of Ladies.

“The Israelis have targeted a large ammunition depot. There were several strikes and the explosions were huge. There are reports that Iranian personnel have been killed, ”said Zaid al-Reys, a Syrian analyst in contact with sources on the ground.

A Syrian army spokesman reportedly said air defenses thwarted most of the missiles that targeted the southern suburbs of Damascus, areas that Israel struck in the past, before reaching their targets and inflicting only “material losses”.

Mandatory militias

Syrian military deserters said the attack targeted a large Iran-run ammunition depot in Jabal al-Mane, near the town of Kiswa, where Iranian Revolutionary Guards have long been holed up in a hilly area in 15 km south of the center of Damascus.

The explosions were so violent that they were heard in the capital and shook the windows of several neighborhoods, according to residents.

The bases in eastern, central and southern Syria that Israel has struck in recent months are believed to have a heavy presence of Iranian-backed militias, according to intelligence sources and military deserters familiar with the area.

Syria never publicly acknowledges that the attacks target Iranian assets in a country where Tehran’s military presence has covered most of the government-controlled areas.

Western intelligence sources say Israel’s strikes on Syria are part of a shadow war endorsed by the United States and part of their anti-Iran policies.

Israel has admitted to carrying out numerous raids inside Syria since the start of the civil war in 2011.

Israeli defense officials have said in recent months that Israel will step up its campaign against Iran in Syria where, with the help of its proxy militias, Tehran has expanded its presence.
