Swiss zoo keeper killed by a Siberian tiger inside the enclosure

A Swiss zoo keeper was killed on Saturday after being attacked by a Siberian tiger in front of horrified visitors to the Zurich zoo.Spectators sounded the alarm after seeing the tiger, named Irina, attack the 55-year-old goalkeeper, according to the Associated Press.

Other zoo workers rushed to rescue the woman and lured the tiger out of her enclosure as first responders attempted to revive the zoo keeper.

“Unfortunately, all the aid arrived too late. The woman died at the scene, “said Zurich police spokeswoman Judith Hoedl, according to the AP.

Hoedl said an investigation had been opened into the incident, including why the guard was in the compound with the tiger.

The tiger was born in 2015 in a zoo in the Danish city of Odense and transferred to Zurich a year ago, according to Severin Dressen, director of the zoo.

“Our full sympathy goes out to the loved ones,” said Dressen, adding that the guard was a long-time member of the staff.

He said that visitors and workers who saw the attack were receiving psychological counseling.

The zoo had recently reopened after a stop related to the coronavirus.
