“Just like we’ve seen cases skyrocket, we can turn things around in two to three weeks if we can get a critical mass of people wearing face covers, at least 6 feet apart, doing the things that we know effective, “he said. “And it’s important for the American people to understand when we talk about fall, we have the ability to turn things around very quickly if people do the right thing.” ”

Margaret Brennan of CBS asked Adams if he regretted comments he made in March urging Americans to stop buying masks, saying they were not effective.
“I said that at the time because everything we knew about coronaviruses before that time told us that people were not likely to spread when they were asymptomatic,” he said.
“I want the American people to understand, we follow the science and when we learn more, our recommendations change. But it is difficult when people keep talking about things from three or four months ago, ”he added.
He said that science now indicates that asymptomatic carriers can spread the virus and that masks are an effective tool to limit the spread.
Federal guidelines recommend face covers, but there is no federal mandate to use them. Many states and local leaders have imposed orders requiring the use of face covers in public.
Adams said warrants requiring facial coverage work best at the local and state level, arguing that a federal warrant could lead to “over-policing” problems.
“We need people to understand why they do it and we need people to understand how they benefit from it,” he said. “If we’re just trying to make it mandatory, you have to have an enforcement mechanism, and we’re in the middle of a time when over-policing has caused the deaths of many different people for very minor offenses. This is a very important consideration. ”
The United States has reported more than 3.2 million cases of coronavirus, according to data compiled by Johns Hopkins University. The United States reports the most cases in all countries, according to the same database. Forty-three states have seen an increase in the number of confirmed coronavirus cases on an average day in the past two weeks.
