Businesses will reopen in the Northeast this weekend after the government eased lockout restrictions. The owners of pubs, restaurants, hairdressers and others will open their doors to customers and welcome them after a forced closure of more than three months due to the coronavirus pandemic.

Boris Johnson on Friday urged people in England to enjoy the weekend “safely”, fearing that the lock-up would be eased too quickly.

He said: “These are our local restaurants, our hairdressers, our libraries, our museums, our cinemas and yes, our pubs – these are our hotels, our guesthouses, and in fact a large part of our tourism industry.

“All of these companies and their employees have made heroic efforts to prepare their sites for this reopening in order to find a way to do business that keeps their customers safe.”
