Stephen Graham’s touching gesture that made Jodie Comer the BAFTA-winning star


It turns out that Jodie Comer has to thank her lucky stars for Stephen Graham’s gesture that launched her acting career.The actress, 27, is one of the nominees for this year’s BAFTA TV Awards in the Leading Actress category for her role as Oksana Astankova / Villanelle in Killing Eve.

And during tonight’s pre-show with Tom Allen ahead of the virtual awards show, Jodie chatted with the comic alongside Stephen, who joined the call from her living room.

During their conversation, Tom congratulated the duo on their respective nominations; with Stephen being nominated for lead actor for his role in The Virtues.

Stephen revealed how he helped Jodie start her career

As Tom asked the two men how they knew each other, Stephen joked, “Jodie and I worked together years ago – we met on a production called Good Cop. Jodie had a small role and she was just wonderful to work with.

“I just saw his talent immediately and I just said to him, ‘Look, I think you have amazing talent and if there is any way I could get your number – don’t worry, I’m married and all that – and contact my agents on your behalf? and she was like “What? Me? Honestly? ”

“And then I just introduced her to them and bosh.”

Tom then clarified if Stephen had really told Jodie not to lose her accent, to which she replied, “Yes, yes. Because I always had this thing in my head that I needed or would be taken more seriously. if I did, and Stephen was like, “Are you kidding? Never do that ”.

“And I was so happy he reminded me of it because he’s so genuine and still himself. Seeing someone from Liverpool doing what they are doing was truly inspiring. ”

Tom then showed off Jodie’s moving acceptance speech during her monumental victory last year for Killing Eve – in which she thanked Stephen for launching her career.

In her speech last year, an emotional Jodie said: “I want to take this moment to thank Stephen Graham.

“If I didn’t owe you a pint before, I do now.” Thank you for the generosity you showed me all these years ago.

It’s safe to say Stephen was right in what he saw, as Jodie is set for another BAFTA tonight.
