A SPEARFISHER was mutilated to death by a shark off the coast of Australia.
The 36-year-old was attacked on Saturday near the tourist point on Fraser Island.
The unnamed man was bitten on the legs.
He was seriously injured and lost a lot of blood before dying at the scene.
Paramedics were called to the Indian Head site just after 2 p.m. local time.
They were descended from the RACQ Lifeflight Rescue helicopter – but although he worked to save the diver for more than an hour, he was declared dead at the scene, said the Queensland Ambulance Service.
Police say he died shortly after 4:30 p.m.
They were unable to identify the victim immediately and stated that a report was being prepared for the coroner.
Fraser Coast mayor George Seymour said the local community was deeply saddened by the tragedy.
He wrote on Facebook: “It is an extremely sad day for our community.
“Our deepest condolences go out to the family and friends of this young man.
“The loss of a young life with its future ahead of it is a tragedy beyond words and we share their sadness and their sorrow. “
