Secoriea Turner was shot dead Saturday night near Wendy’s restaurant where black man Rayshard Brooks was killed by a white policeman on June 12.
The restaurant was then burned down and the site became a site of frequent demonstrations against police violence.
Meters from where the little girl was shot, another person was shot Sunday evening and two people were injured.
During the weekend of July 4 – which saw Americans celebrating Independence Day – several other children also died in the shootings.
Officials said Secoriea was in the car with his mother and another adult when the driver attempted to pass through illegally placed barricades. They were trying to enter a parking lot, but the entrance was blocked by armed individuals.
Someone in the group opened fire on the car, hitting it several times and hitting the child.
The driver took Secoriea to the Atlanta Medical Center, but she did not survive.
Her mother Charmaine Turner said in tears, “We understand the frustration of Rayshard Brooks, we understand.
“We have nothing to do with it, we are innocent. We didn’t want to hurt, my baby didn’t want to hurt.
“She will not make her ninth birthday, we are doing nothing.
“They say Black Lives Matter. You killed yours, you killed yours this time. ”
Police released a wanted poster announcing a $ 10,000 (£ 7,900) reward for information while the mayor of Atlanta urged people to come forward.
Mayor Keisha Lance Bottoms said, “I ask you to please honor the life of this baby. Please, if you know who did this, please hand them over. ”
” Enough is enough. We talked about this movement that is happening across America right now when we have the ears and the interest of people across this country and around the world who say they want to see change.
“We are hurting ourselves more than any police officer of this force. We have had over 75 shots in the city in the past few weeks. You can’t blame APD (Atlanta Police Department). “
