Seattle NHL franchise teases potential team name announcement

The Seattle NHL franchise looks set to announce its long-awaited team name.

In a video posted to Twitter on Wednesday night, the team teased an announcement scheduled to take place on July 23 at 9 a.m. PT.

“The 32nd franchise comes to life,” the video caption reads.

While the video doesn’t show any details on what the announcement will be, it is generally believed to be the name of the Seattle squad, whose announcement has been delayed since mid-March.

In a statement posted on the team’s website at the time, CEO and team chairman Tod Leiweke said the “unprecedented times” with the coronavirus outbreak had changed the timeline for announcing the name and that the franchise would “look for the right time” to unveil what the team will be called.

Oak View Group CEO Tim Leiweke will join Jeff Marek, Brian Burke and Justin Bourne on Sportsnet 590 The Fan at 12:30 p.m. ET Thursday to discuss the NHL franchise announcement.

The Seattle expansion squad will begin playing in the 2021-22 season after renovations are completed at the Seattle Center arena.
