Sault’s only DavidsTea restaurant won’t reopen


Bad news for Sault Ste. Marie tea lovers.DavidsTea in Station Mall will not reopen.

The company confirmed this week that it will close 166 Canadian stores, including its Sault Ste. Marie, citing “restructuring” as the reason for the closures.

According to a statement posted on DavidsTea’s website, “The way customers buy has continued to evolve and we want and need to adapt with you. The new retail landscape has forced us to re-evaluate how we can bring tea to our fans most effectively. ”

Forty-two stores in the United States were also closed permanently.

The company did not pay rent in any of its stores for the months of April, May or June. All of its stores have been closed since March 17 due to the COVID-19 pandemic.

According to bankruptcy documents, the company lists deficits of a combined $ 93.2 million over the past three years.

DavidsTea plans to continue selling its products in grocery stores and online.
