Loved for their unique flavors of croissants, macaroons and afternoon tea, it’s an ending as we know it for this sweet spot.

As 2020 began, the 10th anniversary of L’Opera Patisserie de Richmond was shaping up to be a record year. The family-run bakery and tea shop was about to launch a revamped menu that would feature fondue dishes, perfect for sharing, in the spring.

However, as everyone now knows, 2020 has a few surprises in store for all of us.

The Opera Patisserie has just revealed that it will close permanently in August.

“Recently we had a rare and wonderful opportunity to take a break, reflect on our business and how we want to move forward in the future. It is bittersweet for me to say that we will be closing our bakery doors on August 16th. “Writes co-owner Janice Marta.

However, Marta adds that L’Opera will continue, but not in the same physical retail space.

“I can’t wait to share with you the next chapter of The Opera and all the exciting things we have planned. Don’t worry, this won’t be the last time you taste our puff pastry croissants, ”says Marta.

“Baking has grown since 2010 and looking back it was nothing short of a miracle that we were still here,” Marta said in mid-February.

Marta started the business in 2010, when she was a student at UBC and an amateur baker, eager to recreate those beautiful, buttery, flaky croissants that she enjoyed on a trip to Paris. She got the business from the field with the help of parents, who have participated in L’Opéra for the past decade.

In addition to croissants – which also come in exciting contemporary flavors like ‘dirty matcha’, masago, and salted duck egg yolk – L’Opera is beloved for its popular macaroons, as well as its tea service. ‘afternoon.

Marta says that until closing day, they will continue to offer pre-order pastries and desserts on weekends, as well as a special take-out tea service available on their last two weekends.

“I hope to see you again at L’Opera Patisserie. We are extremely grateful for your support over the past decade. It wouldn’t be the same without you.
