Report: Yasiel Puig to sign with Atlanta Braves

ATLANTA – Freelance player Yasiel Puig and the Atlanta Braves have agreed to a one-year deal, someone familiar with the deal said on Tuesday. The person spoke to the Associated Press on condition of anonymity because the agreement is not official until Puig has a medical examination.

The deal helps the Braves solve a deep problem in their outer field.

Puig totaled .267 with 24 homers and 84 RBIs for Cincinnati and Cleveland in 2019. He also stole 19 goals.

Puig, 29, was the last renowned free agent of the big season who had not signed with a team.

Puig of Cuba made his major league debut with the Los Angeles Dodgers in 2013. He hit .263 with a career record 28 homerun for the Dodgers in 2017 and added 23 homeruns in 125 games in 2018 .

The Braves, NL East champions, faced a problem of depth in their outside field even after signing Marcell Ozuna to a one-year, $ 18-million off-season contract.

Veteran Nick Markakis withdrawn from the season before summer camp. Ozuna or Adam Duvall may be required as a designated hitter during the shortened 60 game season.

The shortage of outfield players was highlighted when rookie Cristian Pache pinched his right ankle in Monday night’s intrasquad game and was unavailable on Tuesday.

“We are a bit thin,” manager Brian Snitker said on Tuesday. “We started this thing feeling really good in depth and we have already used it like I think a lot of teams have done. We are a bit stretched. ”

If Ozuna is the designated main hitter, Puig could join Ronald Acuña Jr. and Ender Inciarte in an outdoor starting field.

Duvall, who was the most productive against left-handers, and Markakis may have split their time before Markakis retired. Puig, who has a career average of .285 against right-handers, is expected to replace the expected production of Markakis.
