Reopening New York: Cuomo announces aid to tenants impacted by COVID-19

NEW YORK (WABC) – Governor Andrew Cuomo announced a new rental assistance program for New York tenants affected by the COVID-19 pandemic. Emergency rental assistance is intended to keep families on low incomes. in their homes.It will provide direct assistance to tenants who have lost their income due to the pandemic.

“From day one, we have made it clear that no New Yorker should be thrown on the street because of the hardships caused by this pandemic,” said Cuomo. “It is extremely important that people can stay safe in their homes as we move forward with our progressive, data-driven reopening, and the COVID Rent Relief program reinforces this commitment with direct assistance to those who need it most. . ”

Eligible households will receive a one-time rental subsidy paid directly to owners and providers of housing. Money does not have to be refunded.

Tenants must apply for the special subsidy, starting on Thursday.

To be eligible for the program, applicants must meet all eligibility requirements:

– Must be a tenant with a primary residence in New York State.
-Before March 1, 2020 and at the time of the request, the household income (including unemployment benefits) must be less than 80% of the regional median income, adjusted according to the size of the household. Applicants can find the regional median income for their county, based on household size, on the UNHCR website.
-Before March 1, 2020 and at the time of the request, the household had to have “encumbered rent”, which is defined as the payment of more than 30% of the gross monthly income to the rent.
– Applicants must have lost their income during any period between April 1, 2020 and July 31, 2020.
-The application period will be open for two weeks. Residents can apply at any time during the two week period.

The program is funded by the Coronavirus Relief Fund, which is part of the CARES law. The program is administered by New York State Homes and Community Renewal.
