INCIDENT: The ball hits Bournemouth defender Adam Smith in the box and Manchester United is awarded a penalty, allowing Marcus Rashford to put the hosts first at Old Trafford.

VERDICT: “Without a doubt, he blocked the ball going to an opponent. He made no attempt to play the ball and I think that’s why Mike Dean gave the penalty. His arm is outstretched and he has blocked the ball going to Matic. He makes no attempt to play the ball. ”

INCIDENT: Eric Bailly controls a capricious pass from Nemanja Matic with his forearm and VAR has confirmed that he is inside the penalty area. Josh King scored the penalty.

VERDICT: “The officials made the right decision among themselves, which is good because it shows that VAR is working. Mike Dean has the best view and he judges that Bailly took the ball on the upper arm. But as the balloon is in the air, it’s very difficult for him to tell when Bailly is but when you crossed the lines, he was just inside the area and VAR recommended it to the referee and gave the penalty, rightly so.

INCIDENT: Etienne Capoue eliminates Christian Pulisic in the area and Chelsea obtains a penalty. However, Capua – which is already on a yellow card – is not reserved.

VERDICT: “He came in so fast that the minute Pulisic had to turn, he had to play the ball, but Pulisic moved the ball away and connected with him. It must be a penalty, it’s just the speed at which he enters. The referee has perfect vision Pulisic returned to the box, so he did not stop a promising attack nor create luck. I think a penalty was sufficient. Not a yellow card for me.

INCIDENT: Jonjo Shelvey shoots from the far side but hits West Ham defender Angelo Ogbonna in the box. No penalty is imposed.

VERDICT: [Ogbonna] would be very, very, very upset if it were given as a sanction. He is a very short distance from Shelvey’s shot, his arm is in his side, you could even say that he is trying to move his arm away from the ball. It doesn’t get bigger. Play.

INCIDENT: Erik Pieters swings a boot in a Sheffield United corner, misses and the ball hits his hand into Burnley’s penalty area. No penalty is awarded.

VERDICT: “I think this is one of the most important discussion topics of the weekend. People said, ‘why isn’t it a penalty, it didn’t get out of his body’ but if you see, he makes such an attempt to kick the ball – and hash it – it bounces and you see him put his hand behind his back. He tries to remove it. So it would be very, very difficult for you to give a penalty for that.
