The 27-year-old Frenchman has changed his mind since he expressed his desire to leave the club this time last season.

Boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer returned to his team after the lockout after recovering from an ankle injury.

While Pogba looked tired and made a few mistakes against Southampton – one of which led to their first goal in Monday’s 2-2 draw – he generally played well.

Solskjaer had started planning for the future without him, but noticed a real change in attitude and form.

So if he is left at Crystal Palace tonight, it will be for a rest rather than being abandoned.

Solskjaer said: “I spoke more or less every day with Paul. He knows he would not be let go.

“There was a question mark before the game against Southampton but he felt ready for it, which was great, so now let’s see how he’s doing.

“He has been fantastic since the restart and has brought a lot to the team.”

The record purchase of £ 89 million next season on its current contract, plus the option for United to extend for another year after that.

Now the two sides are confident that a new deal would finally end doubts about its future.

Mason Greenwood is in doubt for the trip to the Palace with an ankle injury.

Luke Shaw and Brandon Williams are both in good shape despite the shots.
