Dirty Dancing is one of the most popular films of all time. The 1987 romantic drama with Patrick Swayze (Johnny Castle) and Jennifer Gray (Frances “Baby” Houseman) tells the story of a girl who falls in love with a camp dance teacher while on vacation in the Catskills with her family.

Fans are obsessed with every part of Dirty Dancing, from choreography to the classic tale of forbidden love. But one thing that viewers may not realize is that Swayze and Gray did not get along on set. This tension that you see between Johnny and Baby doesn’t work – it’s a real irritation.

Jennifer Gray and Patrick Swayze worked together before “Dirty Dancing”

Before teaming up for Dirty Dancing, Swayze and Gray met on the set of another Hollywood film, Red Dawn. Apparently their tumultuous relationship started then.

Part of it came from age and part from opposite personality types. Gray was eight years younger than Swayze and took a unique approach to playing.

“He felt like she was a wimp,” Dirty Dancing producer Linda Gottlieb told The Huffington Post.

“She was authentic, naive; you would take eight times and Jennifer would do it differently each time. Patrick was a pro; it would deliver the same thing over and over again. She cried easily, she was emotional and he made fun of her somehow. He was a macho guy. “

Jennifer Gray admitted she had less confidence than her co-star

In an interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Gray revealed exactly what it was like to work with Swayze. In addition to saying that he “smelled really good” and had beautiful skin, the actor said the two had to overcome the differences on set.

“It was our second film that we had made together in a short time,” she said. ” We were doing Red Dawn first and then Dirty Dancing. He was a great dancer and he was not afraid. ”

She continued, “Her fearlessness with my fear … together was like a marriage where you have two opposites. He would do anything and I would be afraid to do everything. “

The tension between Johnny and Baby is real. Swayze, who died in 2009, explained how hard it was to work with Gray Dirty Dancing in his autobiography, The best time of my life.

“She seemed particularly emotional, sometimes bursting into tears if someone criticized her,” Swayze wrote in his book, reported the Telegraph.

“Other times, she would slip into silly moods, forcing us to do scenes over and over again when she started to laugh. ”

The actor wrote that he “didn’t have much patience to do it several times.”

But ultimately, their tumultuous relationship in real life led to crazy chemistry on the screen. Choreographer Kenny Ortega insisted that their animosity worked to their advantage.

“The two have contributed so much every day,” said Ortega, according to The Delite. “Sometimes it was a conflict; sometimes it was love. There was something between the two of them that was inexplicable. They were human fireworks. ”

Irritation or not, it’s impossible to imagine anyone other than Swayze and Gray in these classic movie roles.
