COVID cancels Slurpees

The coronavirus pandemic has swept away another summer tradition in the United States: there will be no free Slurpees at 7-Elevens on Saturday July 11 – to greet a date that is doubled with an abbreviation of the name of the chain of convenience stores.

7-Eleven has been distributing its melted drink to all of its customers for almost 20 years on July 11, but it canceled the promotion this summer to reduce the risk of people flocking to its stores and risking contracting the coronavirus.

“Gathering nine million of our closest friends in stores in one day didn’t seem fair,” said Marissa Jarratt, director of marketing at 7-Eleven,

The Dallas-based chain decided instead to donate a million meals to Feeding America, an anti-hunger group. The approximately 33 million people who installed the 7-Eleven app on their smartphones as of July 1 are also eligible for a free Medium Slurpee at any time this month.
