Manchester United boss Ole Gunnar Solskjaer described Anthony Martial’s performance against Southampton as “absolutely first class” after his team’s 2-2 draw.

The Red Devils did not take full advantage of the defeats of their rivals Leicester City and Chelsea by conceding a 96th minute equalizer to the Saints at Old Trafford.

Stuart Armstrong gave the visitors the lead, but goals from Anthony Martial and Marcus Rashford seemed to have given United the three points it needed to claim a place in the top four for the first time since September.

It wasn’t, but it was another impressive performance from Martial, who helped Rashford for the first game before claiming his own goal.

It was the Frenchman’s 21st goal for the campaign and Solskjaer could not hide his joy after being posted.

When asked if he was bothered by his team’s finish as it had been after Thursday’s 3-0 win over Aston Villa, Solskjaer said, “Yes, if you get the hint of two goals , it’s a different ball game but two fantastic goals.

“Anthony, I thought he was excellent today, absolutely first class.

“Especially the second goal, that’s how we want to play football. Fast, fast, across the field and a very good finish ”.

Although United failed to make it to the top four, the draw extended their undefeated streak to 18 matches.

Solskjaer refused to get impatient after the points lost and said that United had its own fate before the last three league games.

United know three wins would mean claiming a place in the Champions League and playing Crystal Palace on Thursday at Selhurst Park before a home game against West Ham.

It seems likely that the top four will run until the last day, where United will face Leicester City and Chelsea will face the Wolves.
