NY Lockup’s COVID-19 Response Lacked Common Sense

NEW YORK – A New York federal judge said a blockade in Manhattan had failed to implement common sense measures to protect prisoners after a COVID-19 outbreak in the facility. But judge Edgardo Ramos said on Thursday that detainees who had taken legal action over the Metropolitan Correctional Center were unlikely to show willful indifference to their plight.

However, the Manhattan lawyer authorized his trial to continue his quest to improve conditions of detention and obtain the release of vulnerable detainees.

A lawyer for the detainees noted that the judge heard the MCC promise improvements. He said that time will tell if the CMC practices what it preaches.

Government lawyers declined to comment on a spokesperson.
