Hill, who won on a scratch ticket in August 2017, was arrested on Tuesday after the body of Kenna Graham, 23, was found on Monday.
A hotel maid found the body after Hill left.
When Hill won the lottery three years ago, he returned to the gas station where he bought the ticket to give the clerk $ 2,000. Store staff said he was a regular customer and appeared to be a gracious person.
Hill, of Leland, North Carolina, was ordered to be held without bail in jail until his first court appearance.
