NEW YORK CITY – New York opened eight public swimming pools on Friday, the first of 15 scheduled openings.“I am delighted. We need it. They need it, ”said grandmother Denise Palmer. ” This is a good thing. ”

Palmer’s granddaughter, Epiphany, splashed and smiled at Mullaly Park Pool in the Bronx.

It is a day that many never expected to come. Amid the coronavirus crisis, the New York mayor was not optimistic that swimming pools would open.

According to Vanessa Gibson, Bronx Council member, “It took a lot of work, because back in the summer, you will remember, there was a question of not opening any pools at all. ”

So, with important safety precautions in place and a limited number of open pools, New Yorkers will be able to swim this summer.

“I want to let the community know that we are taking all necessary precautions to protect them,” said Iris Rodriguez-Rosa, Commissioner of the Bronx Parks.

According to the New York City Department of Parks, masks and social distancing are needed on pool decks, and capacity has been reduced by 30%.

As of now, there are two sessions for swimmers. The first is from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m., then the pools close for an hour for cleaning. The second group of swimmers can come from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.

What if more people show up than capacity allows?

“Those who cannot enter, we will give them bracelets,” Rodriguez-Rosa said. “So that the bracelets they have will allow them to sort of shift their gear and come back for the next session. ”

The following public pools were open on Friday:

  • Mullaly Pool in the Bronx
  • Kosciuszko Pool and Sunset Pool in Brooklyn
  • Wagner Pool in Manhattan
  • Liberty Pool and Fisher Pool in Queens
  • Lyons Pool and Tottenville Pool in Staten Island

  • Jackie Robinson Pool et Marcus Garvey Pool à Manhattan
