In his book, Sorry not sorry, Rivera said her mother worked hard to make sure she had everything she needed to be successful in the entertainment industry. She helped Rivera get the right outfits and buy the tools she needed to seek out the role for the auditions.

Make no mistake about it: Mom was not just a mom. She was a tough guy and really good at her job. She took my auditions very seriously and took every detail into account to help me watch the part. We took a lot of trips to TJ Maxx, where we rummaged through the shelves until my mom found exactly what I needed. She has also invested in makeup and accessories.

I had a mole on my chin that we sometimes covered up using this thick, creamy makeup that was invented for burn victims to cover up scars (to this day I still use it for contouring), and we have had a very expensive pinball machine made – false teeth that we could plug in when a real one falls.

In 1991, Rivera had her first big break from acting when she was cast for the TV series. The Royal family. Rivera said her mother’s persistence helped her get the part. During her time on the show, she developed a close relationship with co-star Redd Foxx.

Mom’s diligence (and my hard work, of course) paid off, and at age five I landed my first TV role on CBS ‘ The Royal family. Honestly, I don’t remember the audition, but when I found out I got it, I bet you could hear me screaming all the way in San Diego.

Created and produced by Eddie Murphy, the series was a family comedy starring Redd Foxx and Della Reese as a retired couple forced to cope when their daughter and three grandchildren move in with them. I played the youngest grandchild, Hillary and Redd Foxx, and was intergenerational best friends from the moment we first met.
