When Aishah went to tell the employee her name, the barista scribbled something on the side of the cup before it could finish, the report said.
The employee then handed him the drink, which had the word “ISIS” – an abbreviation for the Islamic State terrorist group – written on it in black, CNN reported.
“The moment I saw it, I was overwhelmed with a lot of emotions,” Aishah told the network.
“I felt demeaned and so humiliated. It is a word that shatters the Muslim reputation of the whole world. I can’t believe that nowadays something like this can be considered acceptable. It is not good, ”she added.
The state’s Islamic-American Relations Council is now requesting that all personnel involved in the incident be removed from the store.
A spokesperson for Target, which operates the Starbucks store, told CNN that the labeling was “an unfortunate mistake.”
“We have investigated the matter and believe that it was not a deliberate act but an unfortunate error which could have been avoided with more precision. We are taking appropriate measures with the team member, including additional training, to ensure that this does not happen again, ”they said in a statement.
