Morning Report: Dana White open to the idea that Khabib Nurmagomedov’s last fight is against Georges St-Pierre

Khabib Nurmagomedov can make his wish come true after all.

The UFC lightweight champion hasn’t said much since his father, Abdulmanap Nurmagomedov, recently passed away. Speculation has varied, from him never fighting again to returning to business as usual after his period of mourning. Khabib manager Ali Abdelaziz recently told UFC Arabia that Nurmagomedov intends to honor his father’s wish to retire at 30-0. If that’s true, that means Nurmagomedov only has two fights left in his career, and the UFC plans to make them count.

Speaking to ESPN recently, UFC President Dana White addressed Khabib’s rumors, saying that, first of all, Khabib will defend his title against interim champion Justin Gaethje.

” I do not know. Obviously he’s got this fight against Gaethje that’s a deal done, ”White said. “He then fights against Gaethje. So I don’t know who would be his last fight to make him 30 years old. I do not know. . . No clue, I mean listen, at the end of the day, Conor McGregor’s fight – I know Conor has always wanted this fight since the last one, I mean it’s the fight to go. I do not know. Again, we’ll see how it all plays out. But, Gaethje’s fight is absolutely, positively the next fight for him.

But if Khabib gets past Gaethje, things get really interesting. The UFC lightweight champion is already arguably the greatest lightweight of all time, but his goals don’t end there. Since joining the UFC in 2012, Khabib has always wanted to leave a lasting legacy in MMA. Part of that legacy, for Khabib, has always been a desire to fight Georges St-Pierre, something that GSP was also interested in. Sadly, Dana White was never a fan of the idea. But, given all that Khabib has accomplished, White now comes to the idea of a Khabib vs GSP superfight for the final fight of “The Eagle”.

” Sure. Yeah, that’s the last fight of his career, ”White said. “The guys have been great. He’s been great for the company, he’s been great for the sport and I really like Khabib Nurmagomedov. I would do whatever Khabib wanted to do.

St-Pierre retired from MMA last year, specifically citing the UFC’s disinterest in superfighting with Nurmagomedov. Since then, the former two-division champion has been repeatedly asked about a comeback fight, and although he said he was happy to retire, he also hinted that he was still interested in a fight with Khabib.
