NEW YORK – Thirty-one Major League baseball players and seven staff members tested positive for COVID-19 upon admission for resumption of training, a rate of 1.2%.The MLB and the players’ association announced the results on Friday as teams resumed training for the first time since the coronavirus stopped spring training on March 12, two weeks before the start of the season. The opening day has been reset to July 23, the latest in baseball history, and the regular season has been reduced to 60 games on the shortest schedule since 1878.

Positive tests have occurred in 19 of 30 teams, according to the results of samples sent to the sports medicine research and testing laboratory in southern Jordan, Utah. 3,185 samples were collected and tested during the first week of admission tests.

Individual players who test positive are not identified by the MLB or the union. Cleveland field player Delino DeShields Jr. gave the Indians permission to say he was positive.

“I think he’s frustrated because he’s starting to feel better and wants to come back here,” said Indian director Terry Francona. “He seems to be feeling much better, which is good news. There are only the protocols that you have to follow and he’s going to have to do it, and he understands it. ”

The MLB and the union have drawn up a list of injuries linked to the COVID-19 pandemic with no specific minimum days. There are three reasons specified for placement on this IL: a positive test, exposure to the coronavirus, or symptoms that require isolation or further evaluation.

Philadelphia put the infielder Scott Kingery and pitchers Hector Neris, Ranger Suarez and Tommy Hunter Thursday over 10 days without a specified injury. The Phillies had seven players positive for COVID-19 last month, but manager Joe Girardi couldn’t answer if one of the players was among them due to medical confidentiality.

New Red Sox manager Ron Roenicke said on a call to Boston that there had been “positive tests” but had given no names.
