Mikel Arteta believes that Arsenal must make a big signing statement from Virgil van Dijk’s family in Liverpool in order to compete at the top of the table. The transfer from Van Dijk to Anfield has no doubt proved to be a catalyst for Liverpool’s recent success, and was followed soon after by the acquisitions of goalkeeper Alisson and midfielder Fabinho.

Arsenal spent a lot for Nicolas Pepe last summer, even if the Ivorian took the time to settle in England.

They don’t have a lot of money to spend on Arteta to improve their team this summer, and he admits that the club will have to use their resources wisely to find their own solutions.

When asked if landing a defender similar to van Dijk was his goal, Arteta replied, “Yes, because that’s how I think a team should be made up.

“They [Liverpool] conceded goals, with a few individual errors and also set-pieces.

“And by the time they hit the backbone of the team, it changed dramatically. So it’s a quick fix.

“You get one of the best defenders in the world with the best goalkeeper in the world with one of the best midfielders in the world and you change that pretty quickly.

David Luiz failed to strengthen Arsenal defense

“You can see what happened right away in Manchester City when Aymeric Laporte arrived.

“But we have to know that we have to do it our way with our resources. We have to find a way. ”

Arsenal paid 70 million pounds to land Pepe from Lille, but chose to save money in defense by signing David Luiz for a reduced price of 8 million pounds.

The figure for Luiz has increased since then, taking into account agents’ fees and salaries, while the player’s questionable performance on the field has left the club open to criticism.

Young William Saliba has already completed his £ 27m transfer from St Etienne and is seen as a huge prospect as the Gunners seek to resolve their defensive concerns.

Arteta admitted, however, that he had not yet decided on his transfer strategy for the upcoming window, and explained how the remaining games could shape his approach.

“What we have to do at the end of the season is to see the direction we want to take, to agree on the ambition, to realize that where we are, the demands will be huge and go from there”, a- he declared.

“If you are not in the Champions League and you say:” Okay, I do not invest because I do not have the financial capacity to do it “, but the other clubs invest, then the gap widens.

“If I want to invest and risk and I don’t succeed, what happens? So at some point, you have to make a decision, if I want to aim to close that gap and go, or I stay where I am. ”
